How did I get here and why am I doing this?
I’m Jill, approaching 30 and up until last year I was a morbidly obese and rather lazy couch potato. Everyone reading that sentence may wonder why I’d pack up and attempt hiking some 1100 miles through the US state of Wisconsin – and this is exactly the reason – trying to beat the couch potato in me.
Back in 2014, in an attempt to lose weight I have picked up day hiking, walking anything between 1o and 25 miles in a day, most days. After reaching my weight goal, dropping around 45kg (100lbs), in June 2016 I was looking for a challenge – something to do with my new found ability to walk long distance. And what better than a little adventure? I dug out my copy of “1001 Walks: You must experience before you die” looking for a reasonable long distance hike and stumbled across the Ice Age Trail.
So here I am, about 9 months after starting to consider the idea of doing a long distance hike. Books & maps studied, equipment selected and flight tickets booked – I’m ready to go.
